Where do the Black Petrels go?
Takoketai (black petrel) juveniles rarely live long enough at sea to return to the breeding colony as adults and we want to find out why.
In May 2018, thanks to generous support from the Auckland Zoo Charitable Trust, fourteen fledglings were tagged with transmitting devices to enable real-time tracking of their journey from Aotea (Great Barrier Island) to South America. The fledglings' fascinating journeys were tracked for around 12 weeks, helping us to understand the threats they are likely to face on their big O.E.
