SEEKING SOLUTIONS TO KEEP SEABIRDS SAFE AROUND TRAWL NETS

New Zealand deepwater trawl companies are continuing their efforts to keep albatrosses and petrels out of the danger zone around their vessels’ trawl cables. One of the main ways is by reducing fish waste entering the water around the cables. But now that the food tap has been turned off, seabirds have shifted their attention to the net for a meal. This creates a different set of dangers and so thinking caps are back on. Check out the ideas put forward by skippers and others in this report. Trials are underway for several of the most promising of these ideas. We will keep you posted.
